Project descripÂtion
This is a chapel, or a small church, built in a parÂticÂuÂlar house for parÂticÂuÂlar peoÂple – the brothÂerÂhood of InstiÂtuÂto MisÂsionário Pio Sociedade de São Paulo. The project brief is based on prinÂciÂples that don’t necÂesÂsarÂiÂly conÂcur: it should be the cenÂtral area for a house of many homes; a space for prayer and for comÂmuÂniÂcaÂtion; a place of intiÂmaÂcy as well as assembly.
The project reuses the existÂing buildÂing and aims to proÂvide it with a new meanÂing; this is done through a process of ausÂtere and rigÂorÂous designÂing, which relies on the simÂplicÂiÂty of volÂumes, natÂurÂal lightÂing and inherÂent qualÂiÂties of proÂposed mateÂriÂals. The conÂcrete strucÂture is retained, bare and imperÂfect but suitÂable nevÂerÂtheÂless, and someÂhow up-liftÂed by the new conÂtext. The room is revealed as a whole and wide space, withÂout artiÂfice or excess: a backÂdrop for the liturÂgiÂcal fitÂtings to enhance and impart with a sacred and theÂoÂlogÂiÂcal sense.
The brief required depicÂtions of parÂticÂuÂlar devoÂtions of this brothÂerÂhood to be includÂed. These were conÂsidÂered from the start as part of the design, instead of latÂer addiÂtions. OrigÂiÂnal art work was exeÂcutÂed in situ, on walls and joinÂery surÂfaces, creÂatÂing an intense and globÂal relaÂtionÂship between the space and the reliÂgious comÂmuÂniÂty. TogethÂer, the space and the eleÂments that popÂuÂlate the space conÂvey a clear and critÂiÂcal mesÂsage to its users – reinÂforcÂing the sense of belongÂing and sharÂing that imbued the origÂiÂnal commission.
