Project descripÂtion
In 2014 St. Martha’s Church in NürnÂberg burns down in unexÂplained cirÂcumÂstances, sevÂerÂal cenÂturies after it was inauÂguÂratÂed in 1385. The hisÂtorÂiÂcal roof strucÂture over the nave is lost to the fire. In our entry to the ensuÂing comÂpeÂtiÂtion we sugÂgest that the church be rebuilt so that its origÂiÂnal exterÂnal conÂtours are restored. By conÂtrast, in interÂplay with the hisÂtoric natÂurÂal stone strucÂture, a new space is creÂatÂed inside charÂacÂterÂized by a conÂtemÂpoÂrary woodÂen strucÂture that takes on an acoustic role in addiÂtion to a pureÂly strucÂturÂal one. This fulÂfils requireÂments for the speÂcial acoustics of the church’s origÂiÂnal inteÂriÂor to be restored. The new roof strucÂture is built excluÂsiveÂly from untreatÂed solÂid wood.
