Project description

In 2014 St. Martha’s Church in Nürnberg burns down in unexplained circumstances, several centuries after it was inaugurated in 1385. The historical roof structure over the nave is lost to the fire. In our entry to the ensuing competition we suggest that the church be rebuilt so that its original external contours are restored. By contrast, in interplay with the historic natural stone structure, a new space is created inside characterized by a contemporary wooden structure that takes on an acoustic role in addition to a purely structural one. This fulfils requirements for the special acoustics of the church’s original interior to be restored. The new roof structure is built exclusively from untreated solid wood.
