Project descripÂtion
The themes ‘memÂoÂry’ and ‘colÂlecÂtive memÂoÂry’ form an imporÂtant motif in the work of Gijs Van VaerenÂbergh. Their interÂvenÂtions appeal to hisÂtorÂiÂcal, utopiÂan or even imposÂsiÂble conÂdiÂtions. Such is the case for ReadÂing between the Lines, which they realÂized in the open landÂscape of the BelÂgian region of HaspenÂgauw. The work is based on the typolÂoÂgy of the local parish church that is sitÂuÂatÂed in the cenÂtre of many church vilÂlages in the region and, as such, belongs to the colÂlecÂtive memÂoÂry. TraÂdiÂtionÂalÂly, these churchÂes were the spaÂtial and social cenÂtres of vilÂlage life, but that role has now been lost. ReadÂing between the Lines interÂprets the archeÂtype of the church through a colÂlecÂtion of a hunÂdred horÂiÂzonÂtal cross secÂtions – and thus a hunÂdred ground plans – of the church. The layÂers of steel read like a drawÂing in the landÂscape. They are supÂportÂed by a field of columns. The result is an image of a church that takes many difÂferÂent shapes. From afar, the image is transÂparÂent and fleetÂing and seems to blend into the landÂscape. ClosÂing in, the work starts to become more speÂcifÂic, solÂid and impenÂeÂtraÂble, and its details gradÂuÂalÂly become readÂable. This range of impresÂsions is comÂpaÂraÂble to how we expeÂriÂence memÂoÂries: from very vague and abstract to speÂcifÂic and precise
