Project description

The Santa Maria Karunia Bakti Church on Mengkait Island is a testament to collaboration, resilience, and community spirit. Facing logistical challenges and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the project brought together local communities and external partners to address the needs of the Catholic community on the island. The church’s responsive design to the environmental factors like wind direction and freshwater scarcity reflects both the local culture and practical considerations. Despite challenges such as limited material availability, communication barriers, and the Covid-19 pandemic, the project embodies the spirit of ‘gotong royong’—collective cooperation. The active involvement of the indigenous Oang Laot people underscores the project’s significance to the entire community. While challenges persisted, the project’s success highlights the power of collective effort and the potential for positive change in remote communities.
