Project descripÂtion
The SanÂta Maria KaruÂnia BakÂti Church on Mengkait Island is a tesÂtaÂment to colÂlabÂoÂraÂtion, resilience, and comÂmuÂniÂty spirÂit. FacÂing logisÂtiÂcal chalÂlenges and the impact of the Covid-19 panÂdemÂic, the project brought togethÂer local comÂmuÂniÂties and exterÂnal partÂners to address the needs of the Catholic comÂmuÂniÂty on the island. The church’s responÂsive design to the enviÂronÂmenÂtal facÂtors like wind direcÂtion and freshÂwaÂter scarciÂty reflects both the local culÂture and pracÂtiÂcal conÂsidÂerÂaÂtions. Despite chalÂlenges such as limÂitÂed mateÂrÂiÂal availÂabilÂiÂty, comÂmuÂniÂcaÂtion barÂriÂers, and the Covid-19 panÂdemÂic, the project embodÂies the spirÂit of ‘gotong royong’—collective coopÂerÂaÂtion. The active involveÂment of the indigeÂnous Oang Laot peoÂple underÂscores the proÂjecÂt’s sigÂnifÂiÂcance to the entire comÂmuÂniÂty. While chalÂlenges perÂsistÂed, the proÂjecÂt’s sucÂcess highÂlights the powÂer of colÂlecÂtive effort and the potenÂtial for posÂiÂtive change in remote communities.
