Project descripÂtion
Church buildÂings everyÂwhere are being conÂvertÂed, reduced in size or adaptÂed to new requireÂments. Rarely, howÂevÂer, is the transÂforÂmaÂtion as funÂdaÂmenÂtal as in the case of St. Georg’s in Hebertshausen. Here it has encomÂpassed everyÂthing from the landÂscapÂing of the wider surÂroundÂings to the addiÂtion of a funerÂal hall and the design of the altar and winÂdows in the listÂed church.
IniÂtial situation
The municÂiÂpalÂiÂty of Hebertshausen is locatÂed in the Greater Munich area, 4 km from Dachau. The Church of St. Georg stands on a ridge edge in the midÂdle of the cemeÂtery. First menÂtioned in 1293, it was rebuilt sevÂerÂal times as a late Romanesque hall as well as in the Baroque periÂod. HowÂevÂer, hardÂly any of the hisÂtorÂiÂcal inteÂriÂor had been preÂserved, so that it was relÂaÂtiveÂly plain, priÂor to the project. Since the conÂstrucÂtion of a new, largÂer parish church below the edge of the site in the 1960s, St. Georg has served pureÂly as a cemeÂtery church, and extenÂsive strucÂturÂal damÂage meant that it required comÂplete renovation.
Church buildÂing
In order to strengthÂen St. Georg’s imporÂtance as a cemeÂtery church, it has been givÂen a new entrance on the west side along its lonÂgiÂtuÂdiÂnal axis. Not only does this allow for much easÂiÂer access for the disÂabled and elderÂly, it also allows coffins to be transÂportÂed inside with digÂniÂty. As the west facade stands exactÂly on the slope edge, an exteÂriÂor plateau had to be creÂatÂed onto which visÂiÂtors step out when exitÂing the church. The entrance openÂing and the subÂstrucÂture of the plateau incorÂpoÂrate the arch shape that can be found in varÂiÂous forms in the hisÂtorÂiÂcal buildÂings on the cemeÂtery grounds, includÂing the reticÂuÂlatÂed vault in the choir room, the Romanesque winÂdows of the church, the round-arched winÂdows of the morÂtuÂary and, last but not least, the serÂratÂed frieze of the church facade.
Inside, stairs preÂviÂousÂly sepÂaÂratÂed the choir and altar from the nave. Now the new floor risÂes gradÂuÂalÂly from the west entrance towards the choir, leavÂing only two steps to be ascendÂed. Chairs instead of benchÂes make the room flexÂiÂble for difÂferÂent forms of celebration.
