Project descripÂtion
The project for a holy place is approached from a douÂble viewÂpoint. On the one hand to charÂacÂterise the space so that it expressÂes adeÂquateÂly its conÂdiÂtion as holy, and on the othÂer to give an answer to a series of funcÂtionÂal demands pecuÂliar to the liturgy. In their turn these are endowed with a great air of symÂbolÂic meanings.
For that purÂpose we have trustÂed in our own forms of conÂtemÂpoÂrary lanÂguage which have already been explored in preÂviÂous projects (the church of St.John Paul II in SimanÂcas or the chapel of Alcazaren ColÂlege, both in ValÂladolÂid). This was also applied to the use of space, the scale, the use and charÂacÂterÂiÂsaÂtion of light, the sculpÂturÂal treatÂment of the space, the volÂume, and the coorÂdiÂnaÂtion of a unitÂed iconoÂgraphÂiÂcal proÂgramme in agreeÂment with the lanÂguage and charÂacÂterÂisÂtics of the temple.
We have decidÂed on a buildÂing with defined volÂumes which proÂvide an answer to each and every eleÂment of the proÂgramme. These conÂsist of the bell towÂer and a columÂbarÂiÂum in its inteÂriÂor, a conÂtinÂuÂous base skirtÂing the limÂits of the perimeÂter, which housÂes the parish cenÂtre with its accessÂes, and lastÂly, for the temÂple, a cubic volÂume which emerges from an a strip of glass.
The treatÂment of the exteÂriÂor was resolved by covÂerÂing it with just one mateÂrÂiÂal. This was GRC (Glass ReinÂforced ConÂcrete) with a grooved finÂish, with fragÂments of a large size and horÂiÂzonÂtal modÂuÂlaÂtion organÂised in levÂels. We have tried to enhance the pubÂlic charÂacÂter of the buildÂing in the urban resÂiÂdenÂtial surÂroundÂings. The aperÂtures for light have been treatÂed with a scale accordÂing to the globÂal volÂume, uniÂfyÂing them with the use of darkÂened glass. The volÂumes have been excaÂvatÂed so as to form the accessÂes and have lightÂing spaces availÂable on a lessÂer scale.
